She completely rejected her responsibility to the town by referring to a time when the since departed mayor, Colonel Sartorial, “remitted her taxes” (Faulkner 32). Miss Emily and the house became further examples of her disregard for progress when Emily denied the Grievers house a number and a mailbox, Just as Emily herself refuses to associate welt anything as modern Ana common as a mailbox. The cotton wagons and gasoline pumps in this description are undoubtedly symbolic of what Emily must see as the mostly unimportant and purposeless townspeople. That Faulkner should compare the cotton wagons and gasoline pumps to the townspeople through Email’s eyes is undoubtedly one of the strongest arguments the reader can make that both Emily and the Grievers home have no place among for the trappings of modern society.

Namely, he ruled her life and emotion. He taught Emily that the Gridirons must always hold themselves high from surrounding people. Therefore, she seemed to hardly make conversations with her neighbor because they were not noble and belonged to lower class. Thus she had no friend who might share Joy or sorrow with her.
While she is still young , Emily is discouraged from dating with other young men because he thinks “None of the young men were quite good enough” for her (Faulkner 134). He discouraged them-really drove them away- and when he finally died , his daughter was still unmarried and it was a devastating loss for Emily. Never being able to developed any real relationship with anyone else, it was likely her world completely crumbled around her. Therefore, Emily tried to hold him in some way even though his spirit had left.
She refused to acknowledge the death of her father in three whole days after his death. Until the doctors “were about to resort to law and force”, she broke down and let them burry her father. She was so afraid of being alone that she could not let go of him. For this reason , “with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her”. An odd love between father and daughter did spoil Emily life from her first days. C. Email’s inability to accept changes can be seen in why did Emily kill Homer Barron and preserve his body in her house for such a long time?
She killed him because she wanted to save her existing. She existed but not really lived. In the past, she only lived for her father. However, when she met Homer Barron, it was the first time she lived for herself not for her father or her noble status. Actually, she found the meaning of life from then on. However, life was always savage, Homer left her. Facing with the feeling of losing lover, she did not know what to do. Her noble life did not teach her how to keep her lover. Her father only taught her how to refuse a man, but he did not tell her how to keep a man.
She uses to lose near Tanner; odometer, seen could not lose Homer. seen spent ten Telling AT loneliness when he father died; therefore, she did not want to taste the feeling again. She was afraid of this feeling. No, she did not want that life. Therefore, she decided to kill him. When losing love, people perhaps kill the one they love, but no one keeps the dead body with them. However, Emily killed him and preserved his dead body. Maybe, she thought that only sleeping could keep him forever. Preserving him, she felt that she was not alone.
She could feel safe and forget loneliness. His body told her the reason for living. There was still the one who needed her. D. Toby and the townspeople was also described to involve Emily unwillingness to accept change Toby was described other than ” a doddering Negro man”. After the death of Emily father, “the Negro men went in and out with a market basket” was repeated as regularly, slowly and even softly as his appearance throughout Emily life. As a result , Faulkner gives a full impression of the servant’s activities . He was very loyal.
However , the Negro servant became “a criminal” to kill her relationship with the world outside. He did everything for her, which robbed her chance to go outside. In other word, she was isolated from neighbors again, not because she was noble and the others were not, but because she had nothing to do with surrounding people. She found no reason, or purpose to go out and talk with them. Moreover , her neighbors were responsibility for the closed-door life of Emily. They didn’t welcome Emily to have a normal life and this was one of the factors which pushed her into an isolated life.
Miss Emily is “a tradition, a duty, and a care” (Faulkner 242); the town prefers that she remain intact within her old house, an idol, “dear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil, and perverse” (247). She had become part of the history of the town. She was kind off monument, a landmark. Jefferson is smugly pleased at possessing a symbol of a long gone, but honorable time; when Miss Emily dies, she becomes their “fallen monument” Ill.
